“…but how do I know if I’m allowed to do this?

…but what if I’m not supposed to?

…but what if it’s not okay to do it just like this?

…but what if I get yelled at?

…and what if I’m grounded for like ever????

I know….I’ll wait til someone says yes or til I’m really super duper sure…or whichever comes first..and if neither come, well I guess it’s just not meant to be then…..”

And all of a sudden the girl woke up from her nightmare.

And she was panicky and breathing heavy.

And her sister came into comfort her.

And she stroked her heady as she asked “What was your bad dream about?”

And the girl said “Um…Um…promise you won’t laugh?”

And the sister consoled her, “No silly I came in here didn’t I? What was your nightmare?”

And the girl responded: “It was about this girl who waits for permission to do what she wants …cause she’s scared. Of a lot. Of people laughing at her. And of doing it wrong and getting punished. And she’s worried no one will get it. And she’s worried that her way  is gonna look so different from everyone else that she’ll be an outcast.  And she’s scared. That’s all.”

And her sister hugged her tight and whispered “I’ll never tell if you really wanna paint your bedroom purple. And I’ll even help you. And we can get those glow in the dark star stickers for the ceiling.”

And the girl looked up at her and said “Really?”

And her sister looked at her and said “Really. Now go to bed and no more nightmares about what you’re allowed and not allowed to do. Just be yourself. That’s what you’re posedta do.”

And the girl said “How did you know that nightmare was about me?”

And her sister stood in the doorway and said “Duh. Go to bed.”

And the girl fell asleep ever so calmly and peacefully.

And she was smiling…and hugging her dolly.

The End.

Scenarios will change. Roles we live change. Players will change too.

And lesson after lesson will we find ourselves remembering…the most trusted and assured place to ask permission is in going into that heart of ours and listening. And waiting. And standing there. And hearing the nod or not…But if we’re honest, we’ll hear it…even without much of a wait. 🙂

Oh, and one editing: that voice? will never say “Duh.” 🙂 xoxoxo
